History of the Department

The Department of Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology was established by Order No. 04-530 of the Rector of the NEI «Medical and Social Institute of Tajikistan», Z.Kh. Ibodzoda, dated October 1, 2022.

By Order No. 258 of the Rector dated October 6, 2022, in accordance with Article 26 of the Labor Code of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Charter of the Medical and Social Institute of Tajikistan, Professor Saidbek Satorov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, was appointed Head of the Department. Since April 1, 2024, by Order No. 86 F.D. Mirzoeva, Candidate of Medical Sciences, has been serving as Acting Head of the Department.

Educational and Methodological Work

Annually, before each academic semester, the Head of the Department develops and approves a plan of lectures and practical classes for students in all faculties, which is approved by the Institute's Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.

Modern methodological approaches to teaching and assessment are widely used in lectures and practical classes. Methods for conducting practical classes and lectures are constantly being improved.

To improve the quality of educational and methodological work and the level of student knowledge, the department develops and approves methodological recommendations and manuals on microbiology, virology, and general immunology for students in all faculties each academic year in the Tajik, Russian, and English languages.

Work programs (Syllabus) have been developed and approved for all faculties in Russian, Tajik, and English. Based on the research conducted by applicants and graduate students in the department and their research results, amendments are made to the work programs (Syllabus) and the subject plans for all faculties each academic year. A sufficient range of teaching materials is available for mastering the subject in both Russian and Tajik languages.

These include the main textbooks: "Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology" (edited by L.B. Borisov) and other Russian-language publishers; and the Tajik-language textbook "Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology" (general section) compiled by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor S. Satorov.

The main areas of educational and methodological work at the department:

  • development of educational and program documentation (thematic working plan Syllabus);
  • development of electronic educational and methodological packages;
  • practice-oriented teaching: conducting laboratory work, developing a list and application of practical skills, preparing educational and methodological literature (methodological developments, laboratory workshops, teaching aids) in Tajik, Russian and English;
  • introduction of innovative forms and interactive teaching methods into the educational process;
  • provision of the educational process with visual and didactic materials (posters, visual aids, demonstration slides, situational problems, tests, educational presentations);
  • exchange of experience, mutual attendance of practical classes and lectures by the faculty of the department;
  • optimization of the rating system for assessing student knowledge;
  • development of student research work.

The educational process is organized in the following forms:

  • lectures;
  • practical (laboratory) classes;
  • independent student work;
  • student research work.

An electronic test database for students of all faculties in Tajik, Russian and English (over 1,000 test questions):

  • tests for incoming assessment of student knowledge
  • training and assessment tests for practical course topics
  • tests for ongoing assessment (credit, exam in the subject)

Case-based teaching: solving situational problems that examine specific practical examples in laboratory classes and at the Olympiad in the subject being studied. A bank of demonstration microslides for each lesson has been created in electronic form.

Goal: To develop the informational, analytical, scientific, methodological, organizational, and personnel foundations of the educational process within the framework of a quality management system aimed at developing to develop well-rounded, morally mature, socially adapted, highly professional, and creative students.

Educational work in the department is conducted in the following areas:

  • Working with students to strengthen academic discipline and foster a responsible attitude toward learning.
  • Developing patriotic consciousness in students, their civic stance, respect for the law, social activism and responsibility, and readiness to live and work in a modern civilization and democratic society.
  • Developing students' professional stance and ethics, awareness of the social mission of their profession, responsibility for the results and consequences of their actions, professionally significant personal qualities and professional corporate spirit.
  • Developing students' skills and abilities for effective adaptation to the university environment, developing communication skills, and enhancing psychological competence, supporting their meeting their individual, intellectual, cultural, moral, and spiritual development.
  • Enhancing students' moral and ethical culture. Promoting and acceptance of the highest moral, cultural, and spiritual priorities based on universal values ​​and the achievements of world and national culture.
  • Fostering a healthy lifestyle culture.
  • Promoting students' awareness of the social significance of their future profession, developing professional interests, a sense of responsibility for the results of their work, and a desire to improve their competitiveness.
  • Providing advisory assistance in solving life's problems to each student and organizing psychological support.

Resources for the  implementinion  activities of Activities.

  • The department's faculty believes that educational and extracurricular work with students is an integral part of the process of high-quality specialist training and is conducted to develop students' civic stance, preserve and enhance moral, cultural, and spiritual values ​​in the context of modern life, and preserve and revive the traditions of the institute and department. • Supervised groups hold weekly mentoring sessions dedicated to various topical issues of interest to students.
  • The academic performance and discipline of students in supervised groups is systematically analyzed.

Research Activities

The main areas of research work of the department's staff:

The department's research focus is  "The study of the antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and immunostimulatory activities of endemic plants of Tajikistan."

The department's staff has published over 300 scientific papers in Russian, Tajik, and English, including five publications in SCOPUS journals, one monograph, and over 20 methodological manuals and recommendations.

The department employs one Doctor of Medical Sciences, a professor, and one Candidate of Medical Sciences. The department's research rate is 33%. Two applicants are currently conducting research in the department:

  1. Nazarmamadova S.Kh. – Approved at a meeting of the Interdepartmental Expert Council on Therapeutic Disciplines, Public Health and Healthcare Organization, Social Medicine, Medical and Biological Sciences, and Pharmacy of the Medical and Social Institute of Tajikistan on December 26, 2025;
  2. Turazoda – 70% of the research and practical work has been completed, according to the approved research plan; the dissertation is in the process of writing the main chapters and preparing the final draft. The expected date of approval date is set for early 2027.

Since the department's founding, the department staff, led by Professor S. Satorov, has been holding symposium and separate sections on microbiology (offline and online) as part of the annual conferences of the NEI "Medical and Social Institute of Tajikistan," with international participation, including:

Student Scientific Society

The department has a Student Scientific Society (SSS). The SSS is supervised by S.N. Mavlonazarova, an assistant of the department. Students and members of the SSS study the antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of endemic plant species growing in our country using the department's laboratory.

The results of their research  at scientific conferences and scientific wends those organized are presented both within our country and at scientific events those  outside the Republic of Tajikistan.
