Department of Normal Physiology and Patology


HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

      The Department of Normal and Pathological Physiology was established as an independent structural unit by Order No. 04-280 of the Rector of the Non-State Educational Institution “Tajik Medical and Social Institute” dated August 1, 2023. Prior to this, the department functioned within the institute as the Department of Morphological Disciplines. During the period before the establishment of the independent department, Senior Lecturer Rakhmatulloev A.A. served as Acting Head of the Department.

      Following the establishment of the department as an independent unit, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Shukurov F.A., was appointed Head of the Department.

     Since its founding, the department has conducted its activities in strict accordance with its Work Plan, Department Regulations, orders and directives of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan, other normative legal acts, as well as the decisions of the Academic Council and the Administration of the Tajik Medical and Social Institute.

The department serves as the primary institutional base for the training of highly qualified medical professionals.

MAIN DIRECTIONS OF ACTIVITY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NORMAL AND PATHOLOGICAL PHYSIOLOGY

  1. Enhancing the knowledge and practical skills of students in the field of normal and pathological physiology, and fostering their personality and worldview.
  2. Improving the effectiveness of teaching normal and pathological physiology through the use of modern teaching methods and technologies.
  3. Organizing and conducting scientific-methodological events, scientific-practical seminars, open and demonstration classes, conferences, seminars, thematic weeks, etc.
  4. Enriching the educational process with the results of the latest scientific research.
  5. Preparing methodological manuals and educational literature.
  6. Raising the level of educational, moral, ideological, political, and cultural development of students.
  7. Professional development and retraining of teaching staff.
  8. Scientific-research collaboration with other state educational institutions and research centers.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

     The teaching of normal and pathological physiology aims to provide future medical professionals with knowledge of the fundamentals of physiology as a science directly related to their professional activity.

     The topics cover normal physiology, body systems, organs, and tissues based on modern achievements in physiology and biology, guided by the philosophy of dialectical materialism, and adapted to the academic and clinical needs of the institute. The course includes the essential issues of medicine.

    Students of the 2nd and 3rd year of the medical faculty, as well as students from the faculties of dentistry, pharmacy, social work, and medical psychology, study the disciplines of normal and pathological physiology. Instruction is conducted in the state languages, Russian, and English.

EDUCATIONAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES

For the implementation of educational work, the department is constantly engaged in the preparation of educational and methodological materials for students of all faculties.

In recent years, the department staff have developed new lecture courses with updated educational and practical programs, which form the basis of professional medical education. The new programs are prepared in the state languages, Russian, and English in accordance with the national standard of higher professional education.

They define the goals and objectives of the discipline, requirements for mastering the content, thematic plans of lectures, practical classes, and thematic plans for students’ independent work in accordance with the provisions of the credit system.

Over the years, the department has prepared educational programs (syllabi) and lecture texts on the discipline of Normal and Pathological Physiology for students of the medical, pharmaceutical, and dental faculties, as well as the faculties of medical psychology and social work, in the state languages, Russian, and English.

For each course, the department has prepared 4,000 test questions for intermediate assessments and 200 exam questions for students of the aforementioned faculties.

SCIENTIFIC AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department operates based on the scientific research plan with the aim of developing scientific potential, enhancing professional expertise, and involving talented youth in research activities.

The main objectives of the department’s research work include:

  • Improving the quality of training specialists in therapeutic medicine, medical psychology, dentistry, social work, and pharmacology.
  • Promoting students’ creative engagement in research activities and analytical reasoning.
  • In-depth study of specialized disciplines, consolidation of theoretical knowledge, and practical skills.
  • Implementation of the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan No. 148 dated March 31, 2022, on the action plan for the State Comprehensive Program for training personnel for the social protection system until 2030.

EXTRACURRICULAR AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Educational and upbringing activities are one of the core components of the department’s work and are conducted during educational hours, practical sessions, and lectures. The activities are carried out according to a plan coordinated and approved by the Vice-Rector for Educational Work, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Philology, Ubaydullohzoda M.A. The department’s educational work plan includes participation in all state events, sports activities, and social-educational programs. The aim of these activities is to enhance students’ knowledge, culture, broaden their horizons, and develop their worldview. Educational and upbringing activities are conducted together. Department staff continuously engage students in discussions about discipline, adherence to internal regulations of the department and university, and proper conduct. According to the Department of Normal and Pathological Physiology work plan, various issues are addressed during educational activities. These include compliance with the laws of the Republic of Tajikistan, such as “On parental responsibility for the education and upbringing of children” and “On regulation of traditions and ceremonies in the Republic of Tajikistan.”

     In addition, in academic groups, faculty members conduct preventive discussions and meetings with students on combating terrorism and extremism, radicalization, and other negative phenomena, as well as preventing youth from joining radical groups.

     In all academic groups, educational sessions are held on family literacy, etiquette and communication psychology, aesthetics, as well as engaging students with historical sites and sacred places of Tajikistan.

NSI “TAJIK MEDICAL AND SOCIAL INSTITUTE”

       The Department of Normal and Pathological Physiology was established as an independent structural unit based on the order of the Rector of the Non-State Educational Institution “Tajik Medical and Social Institute” No. 04-280 dated August 1, 2023.

       The department is located on the second floor of the third building of the institute. It includes 6 classrooms, 2 lecture halls, as well as the office of the Head of the Department and a staff room for teachers. All teaching rooms are equipped with banners and visual didactic materials. The department has 3 electronic boards and 3 multimedia complexes with retractable screens. Teachers use modern methods and approaches to conduct engaging classes and actively involve students in the learning process. To enhance comprehension of the material during practical classes and lectures, multimedia slides, video materials, and electronic boards are used. Lesson topics are displayed on multimedia complexes, while students also study using banners and visual aids. During classes and other educational activities, the department extensively uses audiovisual materials. Open and demonstration lessons, as well as subject-focused clubs with active student participation, are regularly conducted.

Firuz Abdufattovich Shukurov

Acting Head of the Department of Normal and Pathological Physiology at NSI “Tajik Medical and Social Institute,” Vice-President of the Union of Physiological Societies of CIS Countries, Member of the Academy of Natural Sciences of the Russian Federation (RAEN), Honorary Professor of the Astana Medical Academy and Karaganda Medical University (Republic of Kazakhstan), Honorary Professor of the Bukhara State Medical Institute named after Abu Ali Ibn Sina. He has been awarded the I.P. Pavlov Gold Medal, recognized as an outstanding figure in health and education in the Republic of Tajikistan, and serves as the Chair of the Dissertation Council for the specialties “Physiology” and “Human Anatomy” at Abu Ali Ibn Sina Tajik State Medical University. He holds a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree and the title of Professor.

Professor Shukurov has been leading the Department of Normal and Pathological Physiology at NSI “Tajik Medical and Social Institute” since September 2023. In 1971, he graduated with distinction from Abu Ali Ibn Sina Tajik State Medical University and entered residency in the Department of Normal Physiology. In 1973, he joined the postgraduate program of the same department.

He participated in several scientific expeditions of the department in 1972 (jointly with the Physiology Laboratory of the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery), 1973, 1983, 1984, and 1989 (together with staff from the Department of Normal Physiology, Peoples’ Friendship University Medical Faculty).

Innovations in Teaching:
His research shows that student interest stimulates attention and motivation, enhancing retention and understanding. He introduced educational games outside the classroom for the first time in university practice, such as “Field of Wonders” on physiology topics and “Star Hour of Physiology”, a theatrical intellectual-entertainment performance including KVN-style games on functional systems.

A rating system for assessing student knowledge was developed and implemented, objectively accounting for student participation in the learning process. For each lesson, test assignments of varying difficulty were created for use in final assessments.

The department regularly conducts open model lessons and technical clubs with the active participation of students.
